Slowness
you can occupy.
Winding down takes somewhere to do it.
Not a technique, a zone you step into. The first few times you mostly notice yourself. Come back often enough and the space starts doing the work for you.
align changes with you, so the space stays worth entering.
align at Garage Rotterdam
The inaugural venue was Garage Rotterdam, a medium-sized contemporary art exhibition space in the city centre of Rotterdam.
align runs listening sessions in spaces built to hold silence. We call them align zones.
Winding down needs somewhere to do it, and your living room with the laptop shut isn't quite it.
Quiet mostly comes from architecture. Some rooms sit apart from the world and carry rules people recognise the second they walk in, without anyone having to explain them.
Brian O'Doherty made this argument about the gallery: context produces content. James Turrell built rooms that hold nothing but their own conditions. Get the space right and there's little left to add.
We take that neutrality and put the body back into it. You sit or lie down, there's nothing to look at, and the sound comes to you.
The zones travel. An exhibition hall one month, a concrete ruin or an observatory the next. Different buildings, the same quiet underneath them.
In a city that quiet is hard to reach. You book it weeks ahead and take time off work for it. So the app carries the same room into your ears on the nights you can't get to one.
One room, always open.
